As you’re all recovering from your headaches (whether that’s cos of festive drinking, or getting over the fact it’s somehow 2016), we have the perfect cure for you.
Rukhsana Merrise is a singer-songwriter from London who has crafted an EP that deserves your full attention. Soulful, relatable and with some rather lovely melodies as well. We had a chat with Rukhsana to find out what drives her songwriting amongst other things, check it out below…
Hey Rukhsana, thanks for taking the time to talk to us here at Popshade. Why don’t you start by telling us a bit about who you are and what you do?
I'm a Singer/Songwriter from West London who is currently in the process of writing my album.
If you could describe your music to a newbie in three words, what would they be?
Honest, nostalgic & progressive
You’ve just got back off tour, supporting pop heavyweights Oh Wonder. How was that?
It was amazing everyone who came to watch their show was so wonderful to me. It can be slightly daunting as a support act as your not sure how you will be received.
Any crazy tour stories you can share with us?
I got to watch an unplanned performance of Jamie Lawson live in Denmark and had a really good chat with him after. He's such a nice guy!
For those that haven’t seen you live yet, describe to us a Rukhsana live show.
I would say my live shows are encapsulating, organic and spontaneous.
We love taking time aside to just focus on your lyrics. They’re really engaging, and relatable to a lot of peeps/situations. How does your songwriting process start?
There is no specific starting point. I grab a lot of my inspiration from having conversations with people or things that I generally see happening around me. I treat my songs like they are my eyes, ears and heart living in the same place.
We’re nearing the end of 2015, what’s your ambitions for the coming year?
I want to put some new music out, finish writing my album and travel with my music a bit more. Theres so many people I would love to creatively bang heads and work with.
We’re a pop site, so we have to ask - who is your most favourite popstar of all time?
Madonna. I always loved that she was like a girl group in one person. She had the ability to be cool, sexy, fun, wild & beautiful at the same time. She's a style icon and legend.
And what’s one pop song you are LOVING right now?
WSTRN - IN2... It's so catchy!
We’d like to thank Rukhsana for taking the time to answer these questions!
How beaut is So They Say? We’re a tad obsessed here at Popshade HQ, and highly recommend that you stop what you’re doing, pour yourself a cuppa, and give yourself half an hour to listen and focus on the EP, cos it really is a thing of beauty.
If ya fancy catching one of those “encapsulating, organic and spontaneous” live shows she spoke about, she’s doing a headline show at The Social in London, on the 27th Jan. Get down, it’s going to be something special.
