Brixton-based badass LOOP caught us off-guard with her new single 'Losing my Mind'. Ya know that thing where you hear a song for the first time, and instantly become obsessed with it? LOOP didn't just make a good first impression - she blew our minds out of the solar system. Basically.
The pop songstress has already nabbed the art of a ridiculously catchy hook; believe us when we say you won't get this tune out of your head for daaaaaays! We had a quick chat with her, about everything from songwriting in the shower, to relating to the Spice Girls. Check out what she had to say...
Hey LOOP, thanks for taking the time to talk to us here at Popshade. For those who aren’t familiar - three words, how would you describe your music?
Sassy, emotive pop!
We love ‘Losing Your Mind’, it’s a proper little pop jaaaaam! How did the song come about? What was the writing process like?
Thank you! I wrote it really quickly actually. It was in my second ever session with producer Benjamin Miller. He started writing a beat and then the vocal melody and lyrics came to me very quickly from there. It was a bit of a therapy session with my emotions just kinda pouring out!
And is that writing process always the same? Or do you reckon you might just write your next hit single in the shower?
Haha you never know. I have come up with ideas in the shower before and had to jump out and record them on my phone to make sure I don't forget them! But usually it's a pretty similar process in sessions with the producer starting to build a track and then me starting to write the top line simultaneously. It's great cos you both kind of feed off each other from start to end so it's really collaborative.
Sometimes I'll go into a session with a concept/lyrics already in mind so that will dictate the vibe of the track, and sometimes we just start from a totally blank page and see where it takes us. And sometimes you'll write a song in two hours and other times it'll take a couple of sessions to get it to its end point. The latter can be more frustrating, but then when you do finish it and it's a jam you're all the more proud!
The video, is, A W E S O M E. We love it - we can practically feel the sass radiating through our screens! Was it fun to film?
Thanks! Haha it is quite sassy. It was a lot of fun to film. It was a long day and the geisha look took aaages - we got there at 9PM and didn't starting filming til 2A<! But yeah I loved it, we had a great team on the day, and I loved learning the choreography. You don't see all that much of it cos it's so close-cropped and fast-paced, but I had dance lessons in the run up to it with a fantastic choreographer called Miguel Altunaga. It's been a long time since I've danced properly and I looooved getting back into it again.
You’ve had quite the year, working on the debut EP, some awesome shows, and some big media support. But what does 2017 hold in store for LOOP?
Yeah this year has been amazing. As a totally new artist this year, the support I've been getting has been incredible and I'm so grateful. 2017 is going to be great... I can't wait to put my debut EP out, to continue working with more amazing producers and writers, and to hopefully play allll the festivals in summer!
What’s your earliest musical memory? Whether that was hearing music for the first time, making it, or just “feeling music”?
My earliest musical memory is falling in love with the Spice Girls - specifically '2 Become 1' - and learning the moves with my friend and singing it non-stop. I was four or five I think when it came out? Singing 'I need some loooove like I never needed love before, come on make love to me babyyy'.. And I remember loving the music video and assuming that Emma and Geri were sisters because they were wearing really similar outfits and had their hair in the same style... lol. I also used to prance around singing 'I wanna have sex on the beach!' too apparently. Clearly I connected with sexy songs.
And shows - like we said, you’ve already played some sick ones, but, is it the arenas that excite you? Or the more intimate shows?
Yeah I've loved gigging so much this year! Every show has a different feel, and every audience gives you something different. But yeah I mean the arenas would be nice... haha. Playing the likes of the O2, Wembley and Madison Square Garden - that's the ultimate dream. But intimate gigs have their pulls too, I think especially once you're a huge star and arenas and stadiums are the norm, then playing smaller more intimate gigs must be the most amazing feeling.
We’re a pop site, so we have to ask - who is your favourite pop star of all time?
That is a really hard question and I don't want to feel like I'm betraying Britney or Riri, but I think it has to be Christina Aguilera... she was THE ONE for me when I was at school. 'Stripped' is still in my top five albums ever. Her voice is just so powerful and expressive and incredible - I used to sing along to that album all the time and I think it's definitely contributed to the way I sing and perform.
And what’s one pop song that you are LOVING right now?
I'm a huge fan of Tove Lo and I'm loving 'Vibes' at the moment.
Finally, where can peeps find ya?
You can follow me on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter @callmeloop. We'll definitely be lining up a couple more shows before the end of the year so keep an eye out! And you can find my songs on Spotify, iTunes, Apple Music, the works!
We'd like to thank LOOP for taking the time to answer these questions.
YOU GOT ME LOSING MY MIND. So. Catchy. So. Freakin'. CATCHY. We're a little bit in love with LOOP as ya may be able to tell. So we're waiting with a ton of excitement for the EP.
For now, follow her on all those socials. And try not to walk into a lamp post or something whilst you sing along. That really would have ya losing your mind...
